Saint Charles the Great
Charlemagne, born around 724, ruled alone from 771 after Karlmann's death. He enlarged the Frankish Empire by taking Lombardy, Bavaria and Saxony. To promote education and morality, he supported the establishment and maintenance of church schools. In the year 800 Pope Leo III crowned him to the emperor.
